What the Vacationing Family Needs to Know

When preparing for a vacation it is important to protect yourself and your family before you leave town. What this means is that you take the time to talk with your children about safety precautions while you are away on vacation. There are some things that should be discussed about protecting your family before you go on vacation as well as putting some ground rules down for the vacation itself.

Children should be reminded not to post on a Xanga site or inform strangers that they are going on vacation. Remind them not to tell construction workers who are working in the neighborhood that the family is going on vacation. Ask them not to mention to the school bus driver that no one is going to be at home. Remind the family that talking publicly about vacationing can be placing the family in a very vulnerable position. Burglaries occur when families are away on vacation and your family should not only be aware but should also be cautious.

Be A Role Model for Your Teen

The best parenting technique for raising a responsible teenager is to be a good role model.  This means living your life in the way that shows your values and what you want to instill in your child.  Too often a parent will live by the “do as I say not as I do” rule, which can confuse a teen on what is actually right, and will never actually teach the lesson you want to teach.  Teaching by example though is the best way to convey your values.  Teach the value of service by actually going out and performing community service.  Discuss the importance of financial responsibility as issues come up in your own life.

Always remember that ‘do as I say, not as I do’ will never teach your teen the lessons in life that you want him or her to learn. You have to teach them through you own actions and by implementing and living the values you express in order for them to learn the lessons life has to teach in easy ways instead of learning the hard way.
