When I was a young little boy, only 4 or 5 years old, I used to have a recurring dream that I lived in a very powerful spacecraft. The vessel was shaped like the typical flying saucer we associate with a UFO. The exterior was completely opaque, which meant that that no one could look in, but I could see everything from the inside, thanks to the panoramic windows that extended across the entire control cabin. Later, I even made it invisible from the outside, so I could travel anywhere I wanted and not be seen.

From my comfortable pilot’s chair, I controlled everything and could travel to any part of the Universe I wanted, by simply clicking a few buttons and issuing a few verbal commands aloud. I wore a gleaming, comfortable silver spacesuit that protected me from getting hurt and kept my body in a perfect temperature at all times.

Another thing I really liked about my spacecraft was a special device surrounding the entrance of the craft which totally cleaned your body as you entered the cabin. A shiny white light would go through your body and not only get rid of bacteria and disease, it would also clean out the dirt under your nails, dissolve excess ear wax, get rid of your eye goop, snot and any food stuck in your teeth, and even eliminate all waste from your bladder and bowels. You could walk in sick and dirty, go through the special cleansing doorway and enter the ship brimming with health and feeling totally clean.

In my special flying saucer, I could do anything and go anywhere, without leaving the comfort of my pilot’s chair.

I believe, therefore, that I manifested the Internet and created the prototype for the home business environment. With summer quickly approaching, I mentioned to my wife the other day that it would be great if we had an outdoor table to put on the back verandah. That way, instead of spending the day indoors working on my notebook while Destructo, our three year-old, tears my home office apart (”you just keep working Daddy … I’m playing!”), I could sit out the back with my notebook enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, looking out for our young son. I pointed out to Corporate Babe that we could also sit outside and have breakfast together on weekends, and she agreed that it would be a great idea.

Anyway, last Sunday we were on our way back home from a family outing, when Corporate Babe suddenly stopped the car outside a house, a few blocks away from our home. “What’s the matter?” I asked her. She told me she had just spotted a garage sale and maybe we could find an outdoor table there. “No way!” I snapped. “Let’s just get home! Besides, I don’t want to pay for a table. I’m sure we can find an outdoor wooden table for free.”

Sure enough, today as I was driving the kids to school, I drove past a house where someone had thrown out a large, round outdoors wooden table. Where I live, we have regular council collection days where people throw away their oldappliances, furniture, equipment etc., many of them in reasonable condition and some just needing a little repair. I’m not a Mr. Fix-It type of person and I can’t stand clutter, so I generally don’t take notice of these collection days, unless we’re after something in particular, like a chest of drawers for the kids clothes, or an exercise trampoline, and so on.

At first glance, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the table, however, and it looked like just the kind of outdoor wooden table I was searching for. I made a mental note to return there after dropping the kids off at school.

When I drove back, the table was still sitting there. I parked the vehicle in their driveway, opened up the boot of our vehicle and lowered the back seats to make room for the table. I quickly inspected the table and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, so I cleared the top off some of the things the owners had piled on it and started lifting it towards the rear of my car.

Unfortunately, it was too large to fit in. I tried tilting it this way and that way, but the round table top was just too big to fit. What a bummer …
