Coin Collecting - Give Children A Great Pastime

The article below is from a series of articles and videos about coin collecting

Coin collecting can be a great pastime for children. Not only do they get excited about finding new things to add to their new coin collection, they will also enjoy noting the differences between the many types of coins around the world. For kids, coin collecting can also be an educational experience, as you can use the different coins to teach them about other societies and cultures. Coin collecting can be both a fun experience that is educational and interesting at the same time.

Give the hobby of coin collecting as a birthday or reward for an accomplishment. A coin collecting startup set can make a terrific gift in general, and the cost of gathering together a few of the common coin collecting supplies is fairly inexpensive. Don’t forget, your kit can look rather impressive and important to a young person. After all, you’re giving them money!

Begin with a fancy album to hold the ordinary coins. There are some really nice binders for protecting and sorting coins available on the market. Make sure that the album you select is either one for displaying modern coins easily found by a child or one where the child can indicate the types of coins on his or her own. Include a package of plastic coin holders in your gift set, as individual coin holders are cool things for kids to play with. There are plain types and more fancy ones, so if the price difference is negligible, go for that little extra.

Provide the basic tools as well. Coin collecting is a serious pursuit, and you should add a pair of latex gloves for handling, a soft cloth to place coins on, a good magnifying glass, and a plastic ruler to your coin collecting startup kit. From the start, relay the importance of not washing coins to prevent damaging them. Kids are usually thrilled by dirt and knowing exactly why dirty coins are a good thing will have them swelling up with pride and telling everyone their new knowledge.

Add a coin collecting book. A book for beginner coin collectors is a great way to give extra information about coin collecting for the child to read in their own time. A book on -how to’s- is a good option and so are books with plenty of in’s and out’s of coin collecting. Lists of coins aren’t fun, so stay away from those. Also stay away from the more technical books out there, and find a coin collecting book the child can understand.

Do toss in a coin collecting price guide in your gift, though. We’re talking money, after all, and even money has a value and price. Kids will rave about that special valuable coin and a coin collecting price guide can be an extra motivator to encourage the pursuit.

Last, but not least, start the collection for your child. A child will have round eyes to see that in the album you present are a few old rare coins or a couple of old Roman coins. You can find one of these on eBay or at an antique dealer. Some world coins are a good alternative, though, and having a handful of low-value coins from other countries (again, check out eBay or have friends worldwide mail you some) can be a fun way to encourage coin collecting.

If your child loses interest in coin collecting soon after you introduce it, don’t get discouraged. This type of behavior is normal for children. If you have put together an attractive coin collection for your kids, save it for them until they can appreciate it. When they get older, they will likely be more interested in the hobby, and they might even become a serious collector in the future.

Understanding What Is Colic

Twenty-five percent of all newborn infants are babies with colic. The condition is marked by periods of incessant crying for seemingly no reason that may last up to three hours, three days per week and for three weeks or more. Many parents fear they may just have a “fussy baby” or blame themselves for not being more attentive to their baby’s needs. The good news is that colic in babies only lasts for the first four months, as the baby’s digestive system matures. The crying is most likely stomach cramps from excess gas, a lack of Melatonin (which secretes from the pineal gland around 12 weeks), or a lack of gut flora (healthy microorganisms which also take several months to form).

Dealing with a colic baby can be very stressful for new parents. It’s hard to stomach the idea that there is simply nothing you can do. Suddenly, you feel like a scientist, scrambling for any new tactic or product that will soothe the colicky baby. Treating symptoms of colic depends upon the root problem, which is disputed and may vary from infant to infant. First of all, take note when your baby is shrieking. Is the baby crying mostly after a feeding? Try burping the baby or giving a light tummy and intestinal massage. If you are unsure of how to do this, then there are DVDs out on how to do it properly to facilitate effective waste movement.

Additionally, Colic Calm gripe water has been known to help ease colic pain in some babies. Colic gripe water provides the baby with a natural remedy composed of peppermint, fennel, aloe, lemon balm, ginger, chamomile and caraway. These homeopathic herbs have been used to treat digestive troubles for centuries and are perfectly safe for infants. If you suspect the baby may have trouble digesting lactose from the milk, then you can try a Lactase supplement, which is a natural substitution that will help the baby breakdown complex sugar. This has proven very effective as well.
Baby with Colic
Is your new born baby keeping you up all night with their crying? What is wrong? Should you go to the doctor? First you need to learn a little bit about colic and how it can effect your baby. You also need to know what you can do for your colicky baby. So read on and learn what you need to know about this subject.

If your baby is waking in the night and crying incessantly (as most babies do), then you can treat this colic in babies by adjusting some of the external components of the room. Try playing a CD at bedtime. Lullabies, baby heartbeats, waves or other monotonous, soothing sounds are best. Sometimes, even the sound of a washing machine can lull a colicky baby to sleep. Other babies respond well to movement, such as a car ride or an infant swing, as they are comforting and ease colic pain.

Remember, if you have a colicky baby, then it is not your fault! The baby isn’t feeling detached from you and isn’t intentionally beating you up emotionally. Growing pains are a natural part of life and colic in babies is fairly frequent. Remember that this phase will pass as the baby’s system functions become more advanced. In the meantime, take some moments of reprieve to catch a nap, read a book or go out to dinner as you patiently wait it out.

How Many Stars? - We Can Only Estimate The Incredible Number

Six hundred years ago, the number of stars visible to you without a telescope would have been about 2400 at any one time. So through most of history, the true number of stars could not have been estimated.

With the invention of the first telescope the number of stars increased to approximately 28123. But, even then was reallyjust the beginning.

Even with one of the best telescopes on earth (like one at the Robinson Observatory in Orlando, Florida (USA)), you can’t get a real idea of how many stars are out there. The air limits what you can see.

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

Today’s Definition

Columba (the dove, abbreviated Col) is a small constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. This constellation pictures a dove holding an olive branch in its mouth. Columba is a member of the “Heavenly Waters,” a constellation family. Columba was named by the astronomer Bayer, but was populatized by the French astronomer Augustin Royer in 1679 (before that, Colmba’s stars have been included in the constellation Canis Major). Alpha Col (the brightest star in Columba) is called Phaet; beta Col (the second-brightest star in Columba) is called Wezn. The globular cluster NGC 1851 and the blue magnitude 5 star (mu Col, a “runaway star”) are in Columba.

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

The light from cities , also further reduces the ability to see the stars. That is why most observatories are usually away from cities. But even that limits our vision.

The incredible number of galaxies that were known increased by leaps and bounds with the first telescopes in space. Without air and light pollution scientists finally got a true hint of the real number of stars in the sky.

In fact, Carl Sagan estimated that there were 100 billion galaxies in the universe. If you can understand that there are about 31463 stars in your average diet, you are just beginning to get an understanding of how many stars that were considered to exist then.

These quotes will give you an idea of how the number of estimated galaxies has increased:

“Our telescopes can see many billion of them within reach of modern instruments.” - Morrison, David, Sidney Wolff & Andrew Fraknoi. Exploration of the Universe, 7th ed. Philadelphia: Saunders, 1995: 7.

“The latest estimates have ranged anywhere from ten billion to one hundred billion galaxies.” - The Rebirth of Cosmology. New York: Knopf, 1976: 187.

“The Hubble Space Telescope has found there may be 125 billion galaxies in the universe.” - Galaxy Estimate Up To 125 Billion. Far News. Far Shores. citation of South China Morning Post. 9 January 1999.

Now in fact, a german supercomputer estimates that there are probably 500 billion galaxies. If we take the number 40,000 stars per galaxy, that would make 2 X 10 ^ 16 stars.

de Havilland Hornet - Model Airplane Videos

The de Havilland Hornet model featured on the Boys With Big ‘Uns DVD was built by Ted Allison and weighs in at 70 lbs with a wingspan of 11’3

The D.H.103 Hornet was the British piston engined fighter that further exploited the wooden construction techniques pioneered by de Havilland’s classic Mosquito. The Hornet entered service towards the end of World War II and later equipped Fighter Command day fighter units in the UK and was used with success as a strike fighter in Malaya.

The Hornet was designed as a private venture as a long-range fighter for use in the Pacific Theater in the war against Japan. From an early stage it was also envisaged that the Hornet could be adapted for naval use, operating from carriers. As a result priority was given to ease of control, especially at low speeds, and to good pilot visibility.

Early construction of the Hornet was of mixed balsa/ply similar to the earlier de Havilland Mosquito, but the later Hornet differed in incorporating stressed Alclad lower-wing skins bonded to the wooden upper wing structure using the then-new adhesive, Redux. The two wing spars were redesigned to withstand a higher safety factor of 10 versus 8.

Apart from the revised structure the Hornet wings were a synthesis of aerodynamic knowledge that had been gathered since the Mosquito’s design process, being much thinner in cross section, with de Havilland designers adopting a laminar flow profile similar to the P-51 Mustang and Hawker Tempest.

Control surfaces consisted of hydraulically operated split flaps extending from the wing root to outboard of the engine nacelles; like the Mosquito the rear of the nacelles were part of the flap structure. Outboard, the Alclad-covered ailerons extended close to the clipped wing tips and provided excellent roll control.

Ted Allison is a long time member of the Large Model Association with many models to his credit and many of his large rc model airplanes feature in The Boys with Big ‘Unsmodel airplane videos.

The Truth About Parenting An Adult Child

Parenting responsibilities don’t end when a child graduates from college. In many cases in today’s society, parenting an adult child is commonplace.

How does one define an adult child? Simple, it’s someone who’s an adult but still requires the security of a parent’s environment to get through the early years of adulthood.

We’re not saying parenting an adult child is the same as parenting a teenager or toddler; far from it. With adult children, parenting would be more along the lines of playing adviser. Guiding the child through early financial and relationship decisions.

In many respects though, such parenting would seem to break the mold and traditions of a child’s peer group however, unless “junior” is not planning to hang around for a lifetime, this kind of guidance can be extremely beneficial in kick-starting your child’s life.

Being A Parenting Adviser

So what do we mean by being an adviser. Here are some clues:

- Being a relationship or marriage counselor

- Advising on financial issues; in other words, playing financial adviser and stock broker. Do Mom and Dad have investments in the market? Are these investments Real Estate or Bonds? If so, they have probably learned a thing or two and can easily offer some investment advice from the heart and not guided by gaining a fat commission. Even without hands on experience, parents can assist their grown children in all sorts of ways regarding the stock market.

- Managing your child’s finances is a common way parents help out with their children’s early years as an adult.

These are just some ways parenting an adult child can have a positive effect on their early years in adulthood. Yes, the child also has to reciprocate the offer by the parents to receive advice and mom and dad need to be able to establish a happy medium.

The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter what age your child is, they still need parental support well into their adult years.

One idea is a Bed and Breakfast Gift Certificate. It’s the perfect gift for a retiree as they enter a new phase in their life. They can use it right away to get their retirement off on the right foot…or use it down the road when they want to get away for a different kind of R & R.

A great idea is a nice gift certificate to their favorite restaurant. Depending on your budget, and how close you are to the new retiree, a set of gift certificates might be a thought. It could be three, or four, or even more, to some of their favorite restaurants. It’s something they’d truly enjoy over the coming year. Certainly, something they’d always remember.

A unique idea for the reader and book lover is a beautiful set of bookends. Ones nicely engraved honoring the retiree is an excellent retirement gift idea. A thought could be lovely bookends, with a few classic books housed in-between them. Even better may be those same bookends, and a gift certificate to their favorite bookstore. They can choose what books will fill in the gap.

Speaking of books, In 1744 Benjamin Franklin published ‘ Cicero: On a Life Well Spent’. This book is a treatise on growing older, wiser, and more productive. It’s a definite inspiration for someone who knows he or she can remain creative members of society in their retirement years. As they say…age is in the mind.

A cool idea is a ‘message in a bottle’ retirement gift. As if washed up from a far away shore, this bottle can house an antique looking document. On the document would be best wishes and inspirational quotes from loved ones. This is something the person could look back on years down the road. It’s an inexpensive gift, and great for a mantelpiece.

A classy keepsake personal poem, dedicated to the retired person, is another idea. These are usually in elegant frames and are gifts that, once displayed, are always there to see. Again, their inexpensive while a nice personal item.

Along the same line is a Personal Retirement Book. They are often of high-quality leather on the outside. A book like this could contain photos, quotes, stories, mementos, and certificates honoring their working days.

Retirement gift ideas for the newly retired abound. Be creative. That smile on their face will be worth it.

How to Keep your Freshwater Fish Tank Clean

The most important thing in fish care is keeping the fish tank clean and clear. If your freshwater fish tank is not cleaned on a regular basis it can be a thriving ground of many bacteria and can be dangerous for your fish. Fish get easily get used to the conditions of the water they live in. If all the water is changed at once then might get the shock of an extra clean environment which can be really fatal.

Making sure the tank is not over crowded can help to keep the tank clean. While cleaning the aquarium no sort of soap or detergent should be used. The amount of water removed should be replaced with dechlorinated water of the same temperature as the water in the tank.

Making sure the tank is not over crowded can help to keep the tank clean. While cleaning the tropical fish tank no sort of soap or detergent should be used. The amount of water removed should be replaced with de-chlorinated water of the same temperature as the water in the tank.

It is also a good idea to vacuum the gravel about once a week to remove food and other debris from the bed of the saltwater fish tank. It is required to regularly test the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of the water. It is also a good idea to keep a canopy or a hood over the tank at all times.

Another very important aspect of tropical fish tank care is not letting your fish get stressed. If the level of stress in your fish increases then its ability to heal also falls. The main causes of stress in fish are unsuitable water, lack of physical space, wrong mixing of species, oxygen deficiency, poor nutrition, and sudden changes.

Keep a good watch on each and every fish in your freshwater fish tank. Look out for signs of sickness like cloudy eyes and slimy looking bodies. If one fish is identified to be having some kind of a disease make fast moves to save the other fish from contracting the same.

Carl Sagan - Everyone’s Astronomer

Carl Sagan’s Education And Career

Carl Edward Sagan was born in 1934 and died December 20, 1996 and was an American scientist - especially know for astronomy and science populizer best known for his PBS Series Cosmos. You may remember Episode 3: “The Harmony of the Worlds” discussing ancient Astronomers. Dr. Sagan was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a garment workerand a housewife. Sagan got undergraduate and masters degrees in physics from the University of Chicago. And earned his doctorate in astronomy from New York University in 1960. After getting his doctorate, he served as an astronomer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with added duties as an annual lecturer at Harvard University through 1968. He relocated to Cornell University in 1969, and became the director of studies of the planets there. He earned full professor there in 1971.

Other than his work in the academic world, Sagan was an active consultant for the US space program since its inception, doing some work for them even back to his undergraduate days in the 1950s. He gave the briefing to Apollo astronauts before their flight to the moon, and he contributed guidance and instrument packages and experiments to most of the robotic spacecraft that explored the solar system. Among Sagan’s contributions are adding the “Sagan Plaques” to the Pioneer spacecraft (which showed pictures of human beings, and gave a set of coordinates for where Sol lies, in relation to nine pulsars), and extended this even further for the Voyager Golden Record.

=======================================

Since, in the long run, every planetary society will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring — not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical reason imaginable: staying alive.A scientific colleague tells me about a recent trip to the New Guinea highlands where she visited a stone age culture hardly contacted by Western civilization. They were ignorant of wristwatches, soft drinks, and frozen food. But they knew about Apollo 11. They knew that humans had walked on the Moon. They knew the names of Armstrong and Aldrin and Collins. They wanted to know who was visiting the Moon these days. Pale Blue Dot (1994)

=======================================

Carl Sagan’s Astronomical Influence And Honors

As a planetary astronomer, Sagan was vital to the discovery of the hellish conditions on Venus. Before his research, the prevailing concept of Venus was of a unchanging swamp with cloud cover. Sadly, the Mariner 2 provided radar data that proved Sagan right, and over the course of only days, changed how human beings saw other planets in the solar system.

Sagan was among the first to propose that the Saturnian moon of Titan had oceans of liquid ethane and methane, and that the lines and striations on the surface of Europa revealed by the Voyager probe were strongly suggestive of a world ocean under a thick covering of ice. (The Galileo probe, arriving after his death, gave the best indirect confirmation of this theory yet, by discovery of an abnormal magnetic field that would correspond to the interaction of a very large amount of salt water interacting with Jupiter’s magnetic fields.)

Sagan also gave very valuable estimates of Martian climate conditions, used for the Viking landings and, later, refined for other probes going to Mars; he was the first advocate of the theory that dust storms were responsible for the changes in color observed on Mars from telescopes on Earth.

Sagan is most famous for his studies of, and advocacy for, the search for ET. He was part of the team of scientists that produced amino acids (the fundamental building blocks of proteins) by radiating basic chemicals with radiation about the same as the Earth would have been exposed to millenia ago.

Carl Sagan And Society

While a noted researcher, Sagan hit his mark as an advocate for the popularization of science, most notably through his mini series on PBS called Cosmos. It is estimated that more amateur astronomers and future scientists got ‘the bug’ to think objectively and critically, by watching Cosmos than from any other source.

Sagan was also a firm proponent of nuclear disarmament, and was one of the authors of the original Nuclear Winter paper, and he was a staunch opponent of the Reagan era Strategic Defense Initiative. He was arrested more than a few times for participating in acts of civil disobedience relating to the nuclear test ban treaty.

Sagan was one of the founding members of CSICOP, an organization dedicated to skeptical inquiry and debunking of myths related to supernatural powers. Later in his life, he took up writing, both science fiction and science advocacy. One of his books, Contact, was made into a 1997 movie starring Jodie Foster.
