When the American Association of Retired Persons was first started by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a former teacher, in 1958, seniors have more influence in America. The organization is an offshoot of the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), which was created in in the forties to promote the philosophy of productive aging. After ten years, Dr. Andrus opened the organization to to everyone in America over 50, establishing the American Association of Retired Persons.

The aarp boasts a membership of over thirty five million people aged fifty years and older. This makes aarp an extremely large organization with tremendous political clout when they have an opinion, Politicians have no choice they must respond. America may have a population getting older, but it is also getting more powerful as it ages.
