About Pets
Your pet is a member of your family and you want the best for him. Whether it is a cat, dog or snake, you are responsible for this animal’s health and well being. It is up to you to make sure that your pet is well fed, has shelter from the elements, has proper grooming and receives adequate health care.
Nutrition
Different animals require different nutrition. Even within a species different breeds have different nutritional requirements. Take the time to learn the unique nutritional needs of your pet, what is OK for them to eat and what is not OK. Find out what you can safely offer as treats and what is off limits. You will be rewarded with a healthier, happier pet in the long run. Make sure that you do not overfeed, but don’t underfeed either. Read labels and make sure that your pet is getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals and protein and not just a bunch of fillers. Also, it is vital that your pet have plenty of fresh, clean water available to him at all times.
Shelter
Every animal should have their own personal space, whether they are inside or outside. If they are outside, it is important that they have shelter from the elements, including a shady place to escape the heat during the summer months. Outside dogs need a doghouse that is raised off of the ground. Horses need a stall or shelter that stays dry where they can get out of the rain. Make sure that their shelter does not hold water because it is not good for a horse to stand in water for extended periods of time. He should also be able to lie down if he wants. Inside dogs should have a kennel where they can “escape” to relax and rewind.
Safety
If you have pets inside, even part time, you need to pet proof your home. Some plants can be poisonous to pets so make sure that they are out of the pet’s reach. Don’t underestimate cats, they can get in some pretty amazing places. Make absolutely sure that harmful things are out of their reach. You may also want to keep the toilet lid down because a kitten can fall in and drown. Keep small things that could be a choking hazard out of your pet’s reach as well. You just can’t be too careful.
Health Care
Your pet depends on you to take care of him. This means that it is your responsibility to get the proper health care for him. Make sure that you stay current on all vaccinations and take your pet to see a vet regularly. If you have a cat or dog, you should have them spayed or neutered. This will help keep your pet healthier, prolong his or her life and prevent bringing unwanted puppies and kittens into the world. Spaying or neutering your pet is the responsible thing to do and is very important in keeping your pet healthy.
